Concept, Functions, Determinants of the rate of trade union growth. Theories of Trade Union- Webb’s Theory, Marxian Theory, Hoxie’s Socio-psychological Theory, Mahatma Gandhi’s Approach.
Methods of Trade Unions-Mutual Insurance, Collective Bargaining, Political Action/Legal Enactment.

Structure and Government of Trade Union

Structure of Trade Union: Basis of Organization, Crafts Union, Industrial Union, General Union, Craft versus Industrial Unions, trade federations.
Government of Indian Trade Unions: the level of Primary Unions, the level of the industrial federations, the level of central federations.
Compulsory Unionism- Closed Shop, Union Shop, Maintenance of Membership Shop.

Trade Union Movement in India

Pre-Independence Phase & Post-Independence Phase, Problems of trade union in India, Measures to strengthen trade union movement in India.
The Trade Union Act, 1926: Preliminary, registration of trade unions, rights and liabilities of registered trade union, regulations, penalties and procedure.
